An Amazing CD by Grady Harp

Glen Roven

To review a CD such as this is impossible. Here are so many aspects to the presentation courtesy of GPR Records and Sing for Hope with all proceeds going to amfAR - the musical works, the poetry, the artists - singers and musicians - that a listing of the names of the people who donated their talent to this gift is staggering and speaks so eloquently to the reason for this project. This recording is a `Quilt' itself - the only thematic thread is one of giving hope for the victims of AIDS and for furthering AIDS research.

How often does one recording include the talents of such artists as Daniel Okulitch, Isabel Leonard, Joyce di Donato, Matthew Polenzani, Noah Stewart, Nicole Cabell, Michael Slattery, Melody Moore, Jamie Barton, Anthony Dean Griffey, Sasha Cooke, Yo-Yo Ma, Thomas Bagwell, Ricky Ian Gordon, Glen Roven, Gregg Kallor, Scott Gendel, John Musto and more and more- some of the pianists performing their own compositions. The variety is splendid and performances are first rate, recorded with vibrancy and presence. And in the atmosphere of all this is the poetry of Walt Whitman, Edna St Vincent Millay and Siegfried Sassoon.

There is so much more impact from the whole than there is from the individual works (strong as each is), but this recital, this coming together, is a not only gorgeous to hear but very moving. Looking for an excellent holiday gift? One that helps AmfAR also? Consider this. The rewards are unending.

Wonderful CD

This is a terrific compilation of amazing new songs (many composed specifically for this CD) - performed by a stellar cast of artists. I feel honored to be part of this project - for which I re-envisioned one of my most popular Dickinson settings, "If I..." from my "Four Dickinson Songs," changing it from a soprano and piano piece to baritone, clarinet and piano. I have worked with the wonderful baritone Randall Scarlata for many years, but this was the first time I had worked with the incomparable Anythony McGill, now principal clarinetist of The NY Philharmonic, and it was a thrilling experience.

The songs on this CD run the gamut in mood - from playful to sorrowful to hopeful. All of the artists donated their time and talents - and all proceeds from this album go to amfAR. Please consider buying this for yourself or as a gift. You won't be disappointed!

What a wonderful massive amazing project ! A true labor of love with all the proceeds going to amfAR, giving hope to the victims of AIDS and furthering research into cures and management. Too many great artists and actors to mention individually but the entire concert has great depth and variety. Here is an opportunity to enrich your own life and the lives of countless others all at the same time ! Bravo and well done ! ! !
