Album Review

Pianist Jacques Loussier has spent much of his career performing Bach melodies with his jazz group. Loussier's Play Bach Trio was quite popular during 1959-1978. After a few years off, he formed a new trio along similar lines in 1985, the group heard on this CD. Although jazz and classical music have been combined together in many different ways through the years, no combo has worked harder at swinging Bach than Loussier's units. The pianist pays respect to Bach's melodies before swinging them and his improvisations are a natural outgrowth of the themes. This CD gives listeners an excellent example of his concept and is a constant delight.

Jazz master at Play

The entire album is wonderful. My favorite selection is the Italiano Concerto: Presto. What an absolute delight for the ears to hear and the fingers to try to emulate. The speed and fluency at which Jacques's fingers glide from key to key is awe inspiring. His trio keeps up without missing one beat. The arrangement of "Presto" clearly demonstrates Jacques's understanding of Bach's love and importance of the left hand in point and counterpoint. My teenage sons actually stopped listening to that mess young people listen to these days, long enough to ask me who and what was playing, and could he download it to his ipod. OH HAPPY DAY!! I hope you enjoy the entire album.

never too much

this is great

I love this album! Plain and simple. My parents used to have an album of his back in the 70s which I remember listening to. While I think that specific album has been discontinued, this one has all of the tracks I remember. One of the things I love about this is that you don't have to be a classical music fan to appreciate what the musicians accomplish. And as a jazz album it is seriously addictive!!

b. 26 October 1934, Angers, France. A classically taught pianist, Loussier found a career in commercial popular music more lucrative. Then, in 1959, he hit upon the idea of performing the classical piano works of Johann Sebastian Bach in a quasi-jazz style. Together with Pierre Michelot and Christian Garros, the trio had enormous international success with the wider public. The concept, the low-key detached style, and possibly the huge commercial success, failed to endear the group to the hardcore...
