Customer Reviews

One of the Premier PowerPop recordings ever!

I'm not exaggerating, friends. I originally owned this on LP and loaned it to a friend (I forgot withch one) and it was never returned. The album had limited release (I'm not sure why) and was only on the shelves for a short time. It was never promoted to radio (again, a mystery) which is ironic given the name of the group. There are at least 6 cuts here that would have competed head-on favorably with any other LA Pop of the period (Toto, Starship, etc.).
This album is a veritable "who's who" of LA studio musicians and singers of the time, most still very active today. We have David Foster, before he achieved stardom; the ever soaring guitarist, Jay Graydon, and the incredible horns of Jerry Hey. However, the real reason for owning this record is the incredible vocals of Tommy Funderburk, who was, and still is one of the greatest "undiscovered" singers of all time. Whether he's screaming in the stratosphere or owning a ballad, his is supurb. Listen to the original version of "After the Love is Gone." Earth Wind & Fire virtually copied every vocal lick from this version - why change something that was perfect to begin with.
If you buy this recored and it doesn't measure up to my review, I'll replace your money.

Great memories

I bought this LP back in 80/81 from a clearance rack. One of the best purchases ever. I ran across this recently and still for the life of me have not figured out why they didn't get any "AirPlay" back then!

Great Stuff

If you Love the west coast sound of the 80's you will Love this album. FYI Gil, Bill Champlin, who is singing "After the Love is Gone" on this album was the original writer. He wrote this song and David Foster then Producer of the band Earth Wind & Fire got it for the band. Champlin wrote this song in the late 70's and EW&F recorded it in 79.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s

Session musicians David Foster, Jay Graydon and Tommy Funderburk formed Airplay and released one album in the laidback late-'70s West Coast rock style epitomized by Toto and Chicago. Keyboard player Foster went on to a successful solo career for Atlantic and production/arrangement dates with Chicago and Natalie Cole (Unforgettable), guitarist/vocalist Graydon accumulated over 125 credits over a 25-year career, and singer Tommy Funderburk...
