About Chino Amobi

Virginia-based producer Chino Amobi is one of the co-founders of NON WORLDWIDE, a collective of experimental artists of the African diaspora. Amobi's work is an intense, politically charged collision of genres including grime, dark ambient, industrial, and spoken word, laced with gunshots, sonic booms, and other unsettling noises. Amobi was born in Alabama to Nigerian parents, and began making experimental hip-hop with his brother as an adolescent. He attended art school at Virginia Commonwealth University, and started to develop his deconstructionist sound collage style. Initially recording under the moniker Diamond Black Hearted Boy, he released several digital albums, tracks, and DJ mixes, as well as a few limited physical releases on labels such as Disaro and Steak Au Zoo. Amobi retired Diamond Black Hearted Boy in 2014 and began issuing recordings under his own name. The Great Game: Freedom from Mental Poisoning (The Purification of the Furies), a collaboration with Rabit, appeared in late 2015, as did Amobi's Anya's Garden EP. The year 2016 brought further collaborations with Rabit, as well as Dedekind Cut and Johnny Utterback, and NON released Amobi's mini-album Airport Music for Black Folk, recorded during an artist residency in Berlin. The acclaimed release was issued on CD the following year by Japanese label P-Vine Records. Also in 2017, The Vinyl Factory issued Amobi's soundtrack to Ligia Lewis' performance piece Minor Matter. NON and UNO NYC co-released Paradiso, a 21-track dystopian epic featuring guest appearances from Haleek Maul, Dutch E Germ, Elysia Crampton, and many others. ~ Paul Simpson
