With its robust beat programming and a quasi-cyborg voice that repeatedly barks, "It's tiiiiime!" and "Just feel it!," Hashim's "Al Naayfish (The Soul)" has remained one of the most enduring electro singles since its 1983 Cutting release. The swift, powerful electronic funk rhythm and the eerily drawn-out synth notes help make it as instantly recognizable as anything from Afrika Bambaataa, Egyptian Lover, or Mantronix. The song has spread on dozens of compilations, including the third volume of Tommy Boy's Perfect Beats series. Ironically, Tommy Boy rejected the song when Jerry Calliste, Jr., the man behind Hashim, shopped it to them.
One of the baddest ever
This was the cut man! I remember back in '84, this bumped the E-Club on El Toro. Took me for ever to find it too, one day just clicked on something here at the iTunes store and there it was. Now they got all the beats available. I don't care what people say about the iTunes store when it comes to putting some hard to find stuff they got it covered, and this is one of those gems. I don't know how people listening to the stuff out there now feel about this but I find it hard to believe that any body could deny that this one is a masterpiece.
This is the original scratch record broken up...the original had all of these cuts on it and remixes...if you dont have it you dont have the original...any good old school dj or battle dj has at least 3 to 4 copies of this record for back to back and cuts.
One of the best....
Orchestral string synth songs of any genre. When I first heard this song back in 85 or so(I'm almost 40 now), I just about fell over. And back then, I didn't know what a vocoder was, so I fell in love with the "robot voices"(I actually thought when I was 15 or so that Hashim and other musicians has some sort of robot device!!). This song and a couple of others is what got me into DJing in the 80s(electro/Hip Hop, when suburbian white people generally HATED this music, now look at rap and hip hop!! AMAZING). I still listen to this stuff. I talked to Jerry Calliste once(Hashim) and told him that this was my favorite song of all time(he was surprised!). Like someone else said, this isn't "electronic", its in the Electro category(or even electro funk). If you like this, check out: 1) Jonzun Crew 2) Egyptian Lover 3) DJ Matrix 4) Dynamix 2 5) Freestyle 6) Pretty Tony....and a lot more! Btw, electro is still a fairly strong genre(underground). Dynamix 2 still makes music...Egyptian lover has new stuff out....oh and another(new) electro group to check out is Dynamik Bass System. If you like vocoders/808s you will like this.
