iTunes Review

Girls are a pair of San Francisco-based boys — Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White — and Album is their endearing and unpredictable debut. Much of its appeal lies in how they turn such well-worn styles as West Coast pop (“Laura,” “Summertime”), surf rock (“Big Bad Mean M**********r”), and psychedelia (“Lauren Marie,” “Morning Light,” “Curls”) into something fresh and exciting. Jangly guitars, muted drums, and wondrously woozy production (by White) bounce from spaced-out and disorienting to full-on Beach Boys-style arrangements, complete with hand claps, soaring background singing, and numerous subtle touches. Owens’ vulnerable voice warbles, pops, and changes shape on nearly every song, starting out sounding arrestingly odd on the undeniably catchy opener, “Lust for Life,” soon winning you over with its sincerity. His touching and revealing lyrics are sometimes so naked and raw you feel like you’re intruding, but what saves them from falling into sentimentality is that Owens is clearly more interested in seeking redemption than wallowing in self pity.

Trendy Or Not, This Band Has the Music to Speak for Itself

Since when does something being "trendy" automatically make it uncool? Excuse me hipsters, but you must understand that by discrediting Girls for being popular is just as trendy as liking Girls because they're not popular is. You're hypocrites. And no, I haven't got that haircut, that cardigan, and that new issue of Pitchfork, but I like what I like and this band has quality.

OMG NO!

If I could give less than one star I would. Im so tired of everyone acting like this band has any merit. They do not. I laugh when I see them perform and I just dont see the big deal. Everyone is just so "hip" I guess that talent is pretty much not relavent anymore. At any rate..every song is pretty much obnoxious and the vocals are just terrible..nasaly kid brother annoying kind of way. Just wait for something actually good to come along..this fly by night will be forgotten in the next two years..

Excellent pop

I have been waiting for this album for a long time. Christopher Owens is the heir to Elvis Costello and Brian Williams. The arrangements by Chet White are incredible. Best album of 2009 without a doubt. Hellhole Ratrace is a highlight, but I think Summertime is underrated
