You could possibly say that TV on the Radio are a reference point for Algiers, but even that incredible band hasn't stretched as far as Algiers does on their debut album. I heard their early singles a couple of years ago, and remember being completely taken aback by what I was hearing. But then...nothing. Well, it wasn't a fluke. There is real, true artistry here. Pain, suffering, confusion, anxiety, and moments of beauty are all present. I've never heard anything like this before. This music challenges us to be awake and aware.

The best reference point that I have handy...

Is Trent Reznor scoring black Baptist revival. This a fabulous record. Buy it, then buy it again.

Stunning.

This is a dark, challenging, intelligent, ugly, and sometimes hard to listen to album - yet it is absolutely riveting and stunning. It is definitely not for people who worship at the generic altars of pop princesses and boy bands.
