iTunes Review

On his band’s first covers album, Clan of Xymox mastermind Ronny Moorings chose material by both his peers and inspirational musicians that preceded them. Kindred Spirits opens with a version of Shocking Blue’s “Venus.” An electro rhythm section and Moorings’ ominous vocal may remind listeners of fellow ‘80s dark-wavers Sisters of Mercy, whose early single “Alice” gets the Xymox treatment next. Some modern rock favorites are interpreted, including a minimalistic version of David Bowie’s anthem “Heroes” and a take on The Cure’s “A Forest” that blends programmed bass and drums with live guitars. “A Question of Time” is slightly heavier on guitar than the Depeche Mode original, while Radiohead’s late 20th-century standard “Creep” gets a keyboard-oriented overhaul.

Does not meet my expectations at all. They're much better than this. They really should just stick to writing original music, so if the Clan reads this "please don't do cover song again!!!". Some of these have been covered so many times already by other band it's almost embarrassing to see it listed at all. I mean "Heroes" was done like 100 times already. Not to mention "Blue Monday" a song I used to enjoy listening to but now very much bored with because of all the covers. It's a bit of a shame because Clan of Xymox is one of my faves. I tried, I really wanted to like this but I'm not feeling this at all. I gave it 2 stars for
"A Forest".
"Alice" was okay but you might as well just listen to the original Sisters of Mercy version which is better.
Another "DON'T" to keep in mind here for all goth musicians out there, never attempt to cover Sisters of Mercy, it's near impossible to do better or even come close.

Best cover album of all time. Period.

Expect any album of covers/tributes to wreak negative reviews from sore purists who can't stand to hear their favorite artists covered. The truth about Kindred Spirits is that it is by far, far the best cover album of the genre ever released, and clearly Ronny Moorings spent considerable time perfecting the soundscape. Covering Depeche Mode, NIN, Siouxsie, and Joy Division all on one album? Clearly it's a very personal album for Ronny as well as a goth clubkid's wet dream.

And as an old 80s era Xymoxhead like myself, it is surprising (but welcoming) to hear Ronny reach back to his New Wave roots after distancing himself from it for so long. Lets hope this leads to a reunion tour with Pieter, Anka, and Frank soon. Pieter has been releasing really good stuff lately too.

My favorite tracks are the Joy Division and Depeche Mode covers that - dare I say - are better than the originals. But really you should download the whole thing. Ronny Moorings is so hugely underrated, I hope he keeps making music for a long time. It's rare you find an artist whose tastes are 99% the same as yours.

why why why?!

not so glorious the siouxsie & depeche's covers wich is kinda sad considering clan of xymox is at the same level

Formed: 1981 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Clan of Xymox have been in the unfortunate position of always being compared to other bands since their inception. Whether it's the Cure or Joy Division, Clan of Xymox have never been able to shake off the similarities to their influences. Nevertheless, the group has produced an impressive body of work that consistently absorbed new sounds while remaining faithful to the '80s goth rock menu. Clan of Xymox were formed in Nijmegen, Netherlands in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitar) and Anka Wolbert...
