Album Review

One imagines that taken separately, Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood are responsible adults who hold down jobs and take good care of their families. When the twain meet in the incarnation known as Trout Fishing in America, however, grownup seriousness is the first casualty. The stomach-churning "Why I Pack My Lunch" will remind parents why their kids are less than enthusiastic about the midday school meal, while the anthem "Fill It Up" advises young listeners against half measures. Perhaps, upon reflection, some parents may wish that Trout Fishing didn't make doing the wrong thing sound like so much fun, but it's easy to get the feeling that Idlet and Grimwood prefer honesty to propaganda. When these adults arrested in adolescence do have a point to make, it's the kind of point most kids would agree with. "Wrong Right" admits that no matter how hard a person tries, he or she will still screw up from time to time, while "Relax" states that it's perfectly naturally to feel down-and-out. These cuts are balanced by more nonsense, like "Alien in My Nose," a hard-rocking song about...discreetly picking one's nose. It's a Puzzle should prove popular on family trips, making kids laugh and stodgy old parents remember what it was like to be a kid and laugh. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi

Could've sworn that.....

this was the Barenaked Ladies when I heard Alien in my Nose! Very fun for the kids!

Trout rocks again!

Got a sense of humor? Like your music intelligent and wickedly well-played? Got kids? or Godkids? or Grandkids? Then Trout is for you. This is one of their kids' albums (as opposed to their adult stuff--both are tons of fun). From the wordplay of the title song, to Keith asking if you're a Goop while a demon fiddle wails, to the requisite heartstring-tugging Ezra ballad (King of My Mountain), to the rock-out anthem that's all about boogers without actually using the word, to, like, JESSICA . . . this album will have you tapping toes, giggling, hooting, and rejoicing in your inner child. Every parent has a kid who "gets ideas." For the kid you love the most in your life--and for you.

Taking their name from the novel by Richard Brautigan, Trout Fishing in America formed in 1979 from the remnants of the Houston-based unit St. Elmo's Fire. An acoustic folk-rock duo comprised of vocalist/guitarist Ezra Idlet and vocalist/bassist Keith Grimwood, they earned their greatest success performing music for children, beginning with 1991's Big Trouble. In addition to their kid-friendly songwriting, the band also delighted children with their rather arresting physical appearance, which saw...
