Editors’ Notes

Here on Hiromi’s third studio album in four years with contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips, the trio are in an expansive mood, with only three tunes that are less than eight minutes long. Highlights include the driving uptempo title track and “Warrior,” which both have the kind of attack you’d expect from a fusion band despite the fact that Hiromi stays on acoustic piano throughout this album. Also notable is the upbeat and episodic “Life Goes On,” which moves through a series of interrelated ideas with an amiable ease. The simple melody, straightforward structure, and blues flavor of “Seeker” would to seem to indicate a cover, but it isn’t. The solo piano piece “Firefly” is a delicate waif of a song, illustrating the expansiveness of her language. And while the great Ahmad Jamal has mentored her, the pianist gives a sly reference to Monk’s “While You Needn’t” in the opening of “Player.” Filled with dazzling musicianship and wicked compositional twists, Alive gives Hiromi’s fans exactly what they want while never being less than herself.

Customer Reviews

I heard about Hiromi a couple of years ago for the first time. Since then, I've become a serious fan of her music. This new arrangement is magnificent and astonishing when it comes to bringing together all the feelings and drive expressed by the musicians. There is a sense of maturity in their performance. I can't never get bored with her music; she brings so much creativity into the table, expressions characterized by the constant, but perfect timing with the changes and variation, that keep you captivated throughout each of the songs.

Hiromi creativity does not end

Amazing, awesome as any album from Hiromi. She is, by far, the most creative and skilled pianist alive. She is so talented that she makes the piano to talk, whisper, cry. You can really feel what she plays.

Inspiring Music!

This iteration of the Trio Project feels more like a trio with the bass becoming more prominent. This album has a wonderful dynamic feel thats constantly meandering through various forms of jazz. I feel like the three really come together this time and each have their own moments where they shine. The title track is my personal favorite but every track brings something good to the table. If you enjoyed her previous albums then have no fear!
