iTunes Review

After blowing listeners away with her dizzying five octave range on her first two energetic albums, Music Box is a much mellower affair, more appropriate for a candle-lit evening than a night at the club. This subdued approach allows Carey to squeeze every ounce of drama from the synth-soaked ballads that dominate the album. The songs, most of which were co-written by Carey, feature a lot of lyrics focused on love as a form of escape, as on the album’s two biggest hits, the tellingly-titled “Dreamlover” and “Hero.” Elsewhere she touches on the various stages of longing and heartbreak, including a cover of the tearjerker “Without You,” which was a huge hit for Harry Nilsson in 1971. Carey does offer two chances to dance the blues away on the uptempo tunes “Now That I Know” and “I’ve Been Thinking About You,” but on the whole Music Box is Carey’s way of showing that she’s not all vocal pyrotechnics — she can pull off a slow burn just as well.

Her Best

This is my favorite Mariah Carey album and I think her best. Its short yet to the point and filled with some great songs. This is where you get to hear Mariah sing classic R/B, the stuff she was known for and what made her a diva, unlike the trashy music she sings today. A quick list of the tracks and my personal opinion of them. (1) being the lowest and (5) being the highest. 1). Dreamlover (5/5)- Love it, love it, love it. One of my favorite songs of Mariah's. It gets you into the mood. 2). Hero- (5/5)- Probably the song she is most known for. A sweet and vibrant tune. This song gives me self-esteem. 3). Anytime You Need A Friend- (4.5/5)- Good message, very true. When you are feeling down think of this song. 4). Music Box (5/5)- My second favorite song on the album. Sweet, simple, and beautiful. 5). Now That I Know (4.5/5)- Catchy, up beat, and fun. 6). Never Forget You (4/5)- Has a bit of an americana feel to it. Good tune. 7). Without You (4.5/5)- Just like the review said, a tear jerkker. 8). Just to Hold You One Again (5/5)- A powerful balled. 9). I've Been Thinking About You (4.5/5)- Another fun song. 10). All I've Ever Wanted (5/5)- My favorite song on the album. Very powerful and rich. I highly recommend this song above the rest. You will not be dissapointed with this album.

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s and one of the most popular artists through the 2010s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice. An elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by co-writing almost all her material. Like all artists with lengthy periods in the mainstream spotlight, Carey experienced creative...
