Soulfully complex

This is the complete experience of beautiful meshing complexity and lots of feeling. With words like "She's insane, I'm OK" and then swirling into desperate guitar work and tripping-over itself beats. "Willis" stands out with full stereo separation of the guitars with two different melodies and two different rhythms that are enhanced even further with headphones. Quite a few tracks use this technique which makes it a great one to try to memorize in your head. A couple beautifully thoughful instrumentals give the album a completion allowing a bit of rest from some of the intensity. Everything is pefect except for the throw away super-annoying Piano Scream loop.

Supreme Musicianship/Amazing Atmospheres

I had the pleasure of performing live at Hurl's last live show but was already a fan of this recording for several years. This record is the result of four musicians creating, allowing their music to bubble and stew in its own juices before committing it to tape, and the final sequence is stunning from start to finish. The opening pulse of 'Bred in Kentucky' to the final coda of 'Everything is Electric/Piano Scream' (which I think is a locked groove on the LP if I recall) show these Pittsburgh natives as pure champion. Though others of the period may have lived in a slightly higher national profile (Don Cab, Karl Hendricks), Hurl created a sound that is at once cutting edge and classic. You owe it to yourself to cherish this record for your own.

Their sound was high-energy, guitar-driven alternative/punk, and was expressed through a series of singles. Soon after, another guitarist (Dan Wilson) was added to make their sound even denser. The more conventional drum...
