DJ Box - June 2013

DJ Box - June 2013

The hardcore clubbers’ equivalent of a periodical, Paul Oakenfold’s DJ Box series keeps beat addicts abreast of the latest and greatest producers and disc jockeys. He sets the tone for the June 2013 edition with one of his own cuts, remixed by the Birmingham, England, house/techno DJ Paul Thomas. This version of “Southern Sun” builds on a steady swell of four-on-the-floor beats and some of the most soulful female singing to ever grace Oakenfold’s recordings (courtesy of New Zealand chanteuse Carla Werner). Similarly emotive singer CeCe Peniston lends her vocal power to the following dance-floor banger “All My Love” by progressive house superstar Richard Beynon and London based nu-disco luminary Zen Freeman (dig the retro buildup on this one). DJ Shogun from Orange County, Calif., creates a sonic panorama of electro soundscapes with “Drop,” which serves as a reminder that Oakenfold’s first love is a fusion between trance and dance. Shogun even lays down a deep, throbbing bass wobble here without going full dubstep. The original mix of Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s “New York City” is a cosmopolitan standout.
