EDITORS’ NOTES

Jack Johnson sailed the North Atlantic for the 2017 documentary The Smog of the Sea, a film he scored about plastic pollution in the ocean. That transformative journey inspired this thoughtful and dreamlike seventh album, built around his trademark breezy Hawaiian folk. While the mood is resolutely romantic (the soothing “You Can’t Control It” and “Sunsets for Somebody Else” could be lullabies), “My Mind Is For Sale” feels like the record’s centerpiece. It’s a politically charged call-to-arms and a sign of Johnson’s evolving purpose.

Some people are triggered?

This is typical Jack. I think Jack has always been true to himself and his mellow groove. I guess some people are triggered by his personal spin of positivity in a negative political environment. Apparently, people don't listen to his lyrics because "Good People" and "Sleep Through the Static" (just to name two) are examples of this sort of lyrical message. Maybe the problem for the people vehemently outraged isn't Jack but that they blindly support hate and fear mongering? I don't know that for sure, just speculating. Anyway, I love Jack and have loved him for years! I love the message of the new, and so many others. 🤙🏻❤️🤙🏻

Voice of a Generation

Jack's lyrics have long spoken to me in terms of his commitment to love, messages of conservation, and treatment of global awareness. "My Mind is for Sale" captures a perspective and outlook about our political circumstances that avoids cynical anger and destructive complaining, while still clearly advocating an ideology of inclusion, empathy, and decency in an upbeat musical arrangement. If this is indicative of what we can expect from the full release of "All the Light Above It Too", then we're in for a special listening experience from a generational artist.

The haters are just trump supporters lol

I'm a liberal who can't STAND OUR PRESIDENT, but I also am annoyed constantly hearing about him. But regardless, when an artist comes out with a clean song, voicing his own opinion, with tight beachy riffs, and it's not corny and the message is not intense...I can dig it. I think the people writing about how JJ is a sell out need to listen to his other albums, listen to his interviews, stop blaming liberals for everything, and just respect other people's opinions.
