This super-popular Philly group craftily blended soul, R&B, and doo-wop in the late ’50s and ’60s and later added some funked-up disco. They recorded their biggest hits for Gamble and Huff’s storied Philadelphia International label in the '70s. This killer collection focuses on that era. The No. 1 smash “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” is an era-defining slice of moving soul that features a beautifully gritty Teddy Pendergrass lead vocal, while the strangely uplifting dancefloor groover “Bad Luck” kills with a massive sing-along chorus. The smoky, sax-drenched “Be for Real” is all about their personal integrity, both spiritual and career-wise.
