iTunes Review

Always a lighthearted alternative to the brooding angst of the ‘90s grunge movement, the New Orleans trio Better Than Ezra continue to write and record breezy, catchy pop-rock songs that are bright on hooks and harmonies. For their eighth studio album, All Together Now, they worked with GRAMMY®-nominated mixer/producer Tony Hoffer (Fitz & The Tantrums, M83, Beck, Silversun Pickups) in his “magical room”: The Hobby Shop in Highland Park, Calif. While recording together in a room may seem the obvious way to do things, it isn’t always how records are made in the digital age. Leader Kevin Griffin insisted on having all the members there, and songs like “Crazy Lucky,” “Insane,” and “Sunflowers” thrive on the kinetic energy of having their rhythm section—bassist Tom Drummond and drummer Michael Jerome—working as one. Nearly every song features infectious “ohs” and lyrics designed to raise an eyebrow.

this album reminds me of Closer.

I have to admit that i was fairly surprised by this album. They're slightly better than other 90's counterparts trying to stay mainstream. They sound pretty much the same as the band that we've always known and have managed to sound and feel less drained and lifeless than other bands who've come out with recent albums from their era like Smashmouth, Blues Traveler, and Third Eye Blind.

So it was nice to feel nostalgic and re-live some of my favorite sounds from my high school days. They still have a cool vibe and hip lyrics and are pretty much as good as they ever were. Some of the songs are fun and the whole album would make for decent background music. The lead singer has a good set of pipes and you get something that's pleasant sounding at worst. The high moments on this album come off a little like a mix Portugal the Man, Train and even the Scissor Sisters at some points.

That being said, being as good as they ever were means that they are still only as good as they ever were. Their sound is still a little too trapped in the late 90's early 00's. They've always straddled a fine line between being cool/poppy and cloying and shallow. The lyrics, though sometimes hip, cool and fun, also skirt the line of cheesy 90's fare and can sometimes seem dumb instead of hip. At their worst on this album they sound like a cross between Maroon 5, your average boy band, Blessid Union of Souls and even Savage Garden on one song - blegh.

They're one of those bands that are annoying because they are often too good to throw away, but often barely good enough to keep. They're never great - Juicy being their best song at 4 star quality - but they are good. Able, but forgettable.

Still, as I said, this album did surprise me. The stats are good-to-pretty good. Much of this album is 3 star radio-friendly fare. Again, as I said, pleasant and forgettable that makes for decent background music. There's also a decent number of 2 star keepers and a few throwaways. Ballads are definitely not their strongsuit. There's five 3 star songs, three 2 star songs and 4 throwaways.

I've been waiting!

So lovely! Can't believe they've still got it :) ♡

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Along with such similarly styled outfits as the Goo Goo Dolls, the New Orleans-based trio Better Than Ezra helped open the floodgates for countless alt-pop acts of the late '90s (including Semisonic, Matchbox Twenty, and Third Eye Blind) by merging college rock influences with mainstream aspirations. Originally formed in 1988 as a roots rock outfit with slight elements of country and punk, the group's first incarnation consisted of four college students from Louisiana State University: Kevin Griffin...
