Allan We Hardly Knew Ye

Along with others, I was introduced to Allan Sherman via "Hello Muddah...". I was a young teenager living with my divorced mom. Allan Sherman (in my mind) came outta nowhere. Some of the references escaped me because it did obviously come from Jewish humor. But on the whole I thought they were funny and very inventive. And let's not forget the jaw-dropping musicians and singers that backed him. I especially want to point out the pianist on "Good Advice". These songs became my friends during my high school years. I have always remembered them and as a musician now, I'm trying to bring back just a few as part of my set list. It seems that nobody I ask remembers anything he did. Which is a great pity. These songs are snappy and they run the spectrum of music styles. Also this was a different era of performances. It sounds at times that he and the other musicians are playing a dinner club or maybe a Vegas act. These were written before alot of the tumult of the modern era began. Some of the references are dated such as "Let's all call up AT&T" song. That's when the phone numbers were first getting rid of the "Colfax 4 - etc." prefixes and going to all numerical digits. So that's going back quite aways. But Sherman's one of those people that left us too soon and one wonders what kind of career he would have had had he lived. He provided a lot of laughs for mom and I in troubled times. You just can't miss with anything Allen Sherman did.

After entering show business as writer for the likes of Jackie Gleason and Joe E. Lewis, Sherman attempted to mount his own career as a performer, but initially found little success; "A Satchel and a Seck," a 1951 duet with comedienne Sylvia Froos satirizing Frank Loesser's "A Bushel and a Peck," went nowhere, and an ambitious attempt to release a full-length...
