Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s first proper LP in forever is either a rallying cry released on the cusp of a contentious election cycle or a return to form with the forward momentum of a runaway train. The band of post-rock pioneers certainly isn't subtle on Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!. As you might imagine, given how…uplifting!…that!…title!…is!, Godspeed’s fourth studio album is heady but hopeful, with an ominous but non-overbearing mood that sounds like the collective’s secular take on a tent revival. With REALLY loud guitars. And divebombing drums. And strings that are plucked, slapped, and sideswiped. Of the two 20-minute pieces here, “Mladic” is the one you might not wanna play at midnight, what with the way it bursts through your speakers screaming after just a few minutes. “We Drift Like Worried Fire,” on the other hand, raises its fists to the heavens while showing the group’s many disciples how instrumental melodrama is done. As for the record’s other pair of tracks, they’re both riff-raking meditations on the Power of the Drone. Guess GY!BE wasn't kidding about that whole Ascend! thing.
If you're like me, then this record is like Christmas - ten years in the making. "Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!" sounds like a long exhale. It drones, pulsates, and lulls its listener into a melodic bliss. Upon comparing this record to "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." or "Yanqui..." it sounds less structured and more improvised, with the exception of "We Drift Like Worried Fire" which has clear cut movements. GY!BE have never been ones to get to the point quickly and it is exercised again here.
Solid release from a dearly missed group of Canadiens.
Genius. (Coming from a 14yo)
THIS is music, not lil Wayne, Nicki Manaj, and all the other mainstream garbage. I swear I almost teared up when I found out GY!BE were on the works of a new album. And they did not disappoint!
Makes having to wait years and years completely worth it. I downloaded within minutes of receiving notification from I-tunes that it was ready! As I listen to new material by this epic band for the first time in a decade, I recall being this way my whole life… chomping at the bit, frothing at the mouth, losing myself into that first listen of one of my favorite bands..
It's been over 7 minutes into the first song and it drops around 7:30 into a soundscape of noise and wonder that makes having to wait years and years completely worth it.
This group has clearly evolved and grown and they are not hesitating to bring us along. Few bands have been a soundtrack to my life for years and years. Fewer still I would put in my top 10.
This group is in my top 3.
This is because they are not afraid to bring order and structure to chaos and even less hesitant to bring the chaos to order and structure. These two qualities are so crucial in this age of war and disease. These putrid, beautiful times when everything seems so dismal and grey yet so full of hope.
Long live Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
May they continue to blow our minds with their wall of sound.
May it not take 10 long lonely years until their next effort.
