Editors’ Notes

Beyond brings the original trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Patrick “Murph” Murphy back together for the first time since 1988’s seminal Bug. Beyond remains faithful to the group’s original sound without slavishly copying it — its madcap combination of raucous guitar heroics and moony-eyed introspection seems remarkably fresh and relevant. As before, Mascis explores the extreme edges of his psyche with bruising, cacophonous rave-ups (“Almost Ready,” “Been There All the Time”) and gut-wrenching inward journeys (“It’s Me,” “I Got Lost”). He reasserts his country impulses in lacerating twang-fests like “Crumble” and “This is All I Can Do.” Barlow’s song contributions — “Back to Your Heart" and "Lightning Bulb” — are fat, throbbing numbers with a bracing psychedelic tinge. Anchoring the fireworks is Murph’s rapid-fire drumming, adding balance to Mascis’ blazing guitar volleys. “Pick Me Up” may be the album’s emotional core – its blistering attack reflects Dinosaur Jr.’s newfound optimism.

Best American band

Ladies & Gentleman, this is one of the greatest American bands ever. Ask Eddie Vedder or any other US musician whom influenced their band. It is embarrassing that most people know nothing of this great band, but most people are sheeps. Their live show is extraordinary, and their new CD released in June '09 will prove my point again. EVERY alternative band from this great country is inspired by DJ. I have seen a few very famous musicians at their shows, hanging out in the crowd awaiting the sonic marvels themselves. Just play Pick Me Up or We're Not Alone off this CD to see for yourself. Enjoy one of the very best for yourself. Buenos noches.

Mind Field

by Alien Workshop introduced me to dinosaur jr. with crumble and almost ready. great songs, great band.

10 Years too Long

Dinosaur Jr is a band of contradictions; J Mascis's riffs are dense, but are marked by a spacey air-like quality, the soundscapes are fuzzy and over-distorted yet maintain a sense of clarity and concision, and the band's overall image as slacker Alt-Rock gods conflicts with the tightness and technicality of their musical background. These so-called discrepancies, again contrary to what you would expect, only serve to make their heavily layered wall of sound one of the most appealing acts in music today. Dinosaur Jr. has somehow found the secret to achieving a near perfect musical balance of simple songs which dazzle with complexity, of platitude-based lyrics which lead to surprising philosophical breakthroughs, and of screeching noise rock that somehow turns out to be some of the finest music you've ever heard. It would be a disservice to yourself not to buy this album and come to understand why Dino Jr. is the undisputed origin of pretty much everything you listened to during the 1990s.

Formed: 1983 in Amherst, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple...
