Album Review

Rice splits the material on California Autumn between vocal numbers and instrumentals while resurrecting old-time songs including "Billy in the Lowground," "Beaumont Rag" and "Red Haired Boy."

Ah - the change of seasons - autumn's in the air for many, the fall foliage, crisp coolness, the unpredictable and invariably inevitable Indian Summer warm-up just ahead of winter winds and that first blast of bone chilling cold - the migration of birds and other wildlife, the back to school - back to work, and fall comes and goes in such a hurry. From this classic Tony Rice album, " California Autumn", I'm partial to the Cy Coben composition " Good Woman's Love ". While watching the leaves fall and listening to Bluegrass, will wax autumnally poetic for a moment. No "Leaves of Grass" for sure, but: Almost traveled to California for the first time this fall - wanting to see a gal genius - hey good looking, gorgeous works well too - while I'm genuinely goofy. Still, wouldn't it be nice to be sitting under a tree ( sound out each letter ) K I S S I N G . That's it....all I've got ! California's probably rolling her eyes and saying you may wanta just leave the poetry at home when you come. Will polish the poetry and try next year. While not getting there, did visit for the first time Chicago (3 visits) and Cleveland (twice) the past few months. Both cities had teams denied a chance to play in the World Series for quite a while. It's the same story for the Dodgers in CA. So if first time visits to Chi & Cle played any part in ending the Pennant drought, let's include LA in future travel plans. Granddaddy - a big Brooklyn fan- never recovered from Jackie Robinson's retirement, nor the teams move across the country. ( also noticed Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" was first published there, and reading it is almost like traveling - to have lived in the 1800's- he got around and wrote about it in ways that are invigorating right now...and no matter which teams win world series...root for your favorite regularly.. and to keep our democracy that W.W. was so fond of writing about - get involved and let your voice be heard..and vote ! )

Tony Rice is one of bluegrass' most inventive flatpicking guitar players. Although he's displayed a mastery of the genre's traditions, Rice set the standard for more contemporary styles. A former member of the Bluegrass Alliance, the David Grisman Quintet, J.D. Crowe's New South, and the Bluegrass Album Band, Rice has continued to reflect his eclectic approach on solo recordings, two albums with flatpicking guitar ace Norman Blake, and two albums, recorded with his brothers Larry, Ron, and Wyatt,...
