Get Me

Get Me

The late guitarist Joe Beck played in Gil Evans’ large group in the mid-'60s, recorded with Miles Davis in 1967 (the tracks didn’t come out until several years later), and contributed to many jazz and pop sessions. Paul Simon, Sabicas, James Brown, and Bobby Timmons are just some of the artists he worked with. Get Me Joe Beck was recorded on the second evening of a two-night gig at Anna’s Jazz Island in Berkeley, Calif., in 2006, two years before Beck’s death. It was the first time Beck had played with this rhythm section—bassist Peter Barshay and drummer David Rokeach—but you wouldn’t know by listening to this album of standards. Things start with a swinging version of “Stella by Starlight,” which, along with many of the other tracks here, has a solo intro by Beck. (The guitarist’s introduction on “Manha de Carnaval” is particularly fine.) The closer, a wonderful reprise of “Georgia on My Mind,” is just one example of how deeply Barshay and Rokeach are tuned into Beck. Get Me Joe Beck includes the guitarist’s humorous between-song remarks; it’s a nice touch that adds to the album’s warm vibe.
