iTunes Review

Dominant Legs’ debut album indeed feels like an invitation. Everything about it is warm and welcoming, evoking smiles and celebration. The hooky choruses, glittering guitar work, and heavenly harmonies owe as much to Swedish pop as they do vintage indie bands like The Go-Betweens (the gorgeous “Already Know That It’s Nice” could have been a track on 16 Lovers Lane). Dominant Legs was originally a duo (vocalist/guitarist Ryan Lynch and vocalist/keyboardist Hannah Hunt recorded the 2010 EP Young at Love and Life on their own). Invitation is their first outing as a full band, with three new members rounding out their melodic sound. There are quietly galloping tom drums propelling “Where We Trip the Light,” layers of fluttering guitars on “Take a Bow,” and disco laser-synths on “2 New Thoughts.” “The One That You’re With” snaps and crackles with dirty blades of guitar and drum machine whips of rhythm (a jarring and tasty surprise that sounds amazingly like Handsome Furs), while the soulful and crazily catchy “Hoop of Love” should blast from every car stereo careening to the beach on a Saturday morning.

Eclectic San Francisco indie duo Dominant Legs feature vocalist/guitarist Ryan Lynch and keyboardist/vocalist Hannah Hunt. Lynch, also the guitarist for Girls, began writing songs when he was fired from his job as an office assistant. He met Hunt through mutual friends, and the pair started playing together after she returned from her architecture studies in New York. They crafted a sound spanning cheery synth pop, folk, and electro-acoustic reveries, evoking artists such as Neon Indian at one moment...
