Album Review

After the huge success of his self-titled debut album, Aldo Nova defied his record company, which basically wanted a carbon copy for his sophomore follow-up, and made a very loose concept album touching on themes such as dreams, imagination, and paradise. Subject...Aldo Nova still featured hooks and melodies galore (and an emphasis on keyboards and synthesizers), but the format was different. Perhaps this style curve confused listeners, and as a result, Subject...Aldo Nova sold far fewer copies than its predecessor and only went gold. (Nova also claimed Portrait didn't promote the album properly.) Three impressively spasmodic synthesizer segments — "Subject's Theme," "Armageddon (Race Cars)," and "Armageddon" — open Subject...Aldo Nova and lead into its highlight, "Monkey on Your Back." This disturbing anti-heroin song features a midtempo, menacing throb thanks to relentlessly roaring drums, bass guitar, and rhythm guitar and slow, sustained lead guitar fills. "Hey Operator" and "Cry Baby Cry" are carried by infectious choruses. "Victim of a Broken Heart" is the album's obligatory power ballad. Subject...Aldo Nova isn't as good as Aldo Nova, but Nova had the courage to try something a little bit different.

One of Aldo Nova's best albums!

Some critics say that "Subject" was an awful album, but then again...they're critics - they fall in the same category as weather forecasters. Was is different compared to other artists of the day? You bet! But, perhaps, that, to me, is what made this album a great one to listen to. It wasn't a copy-cat of all the big hit music of the day; perhaps, I might dare say, it was ahead of its time. While I certainly liked my Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Scorpions, and the rest, Aldo Nova brought a different blend of rock music to the table with "Subject". Now, if they could only get some of Aldo's music ported over to Rock Band...

Better a concept album, than no concept at all!

I agree with another post - this is truly an underrated album. I came back to this on iTunes after years of having forgotten it, and really remember how I used to listen to this in the late '80s until the cassette was going to break. It really has some nice lead ins to songs, and some of the main hits "Monkey on your Back", "Hey Operator" and "Cry Baby Cry" have some punch, while there is a ballad in "Victim of a Broken Heart" that is not bad. A catchy tune in "Always Be Mine" is not a ballad or a jamming tune, but nevertheless okay.
What puts this all together is the intros and instrumentals.
If I would have done better, I would have bought the whole album here again, and saved myself the grief! $9 is a good deal!!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Canadian guitarist Aldo Nova (born Aldo Caporuscio in Montreal) was a relatively late bloomer musically, not learning how to play the instrument until he was 15. However, inspired by the playing of Jimi Hendrix and with a keen interest in jazz, Nova worked obsessively to master the instrument (along with keyboards) and became a hometown hero in the local clubs. While playing George Harrison in a production of Beatlemania, he worked after hours as a studio engineer and a 1982 publishing deal led to...
