Album Review

Amaluna is the soundtrack to the 2012 Cirque du Soleil spectacular. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Amaluna features atmospheric, somewhat spare-sounding music that includes guitars, cellos, keyboards, percussion, and some electronic flourishes. This is an evocative album that, as with the stage production, takes inspiration from nature to deliver a strong contemporary, conceptual sensory experience.

True Cirque Pioneering

I owe it to Cirque to break from it's typical mold to fit a more contemporary crowd. The soundtrack provides a unique blend of rock and roll, electronic trans, and mythical, tropical instruments. The sounds provided are almost other worldly with its deep cut bass, hollow island-esque drums, and high frequent cymbals. Personally one of my favorite parts of the CD is how the music at times transforms from the futuristic beat to a 1920's-like jig. This sound symbolizes the two clowns of the show who seem to be stuck in this time, and are very much period. I would have liked if some of the songs from the acts were not blended together like in "Elma Om Mi Lize", and "Enchanted Reunion". Overall this is one of Cirques greatest feats, and most amazing CD's.

I love how this album retains some of the fantastical aspects that we all love, yet brings so much more to the table, and is a stark contrast to other Cirque albums in a sense. This album brings a rock and roll feeling not seen too often in Cirque, yet retains many of the new age styles. It even reminds me a bit of TOTEM with the use of tribal-sounding beats. Wonderful vocals as well.

A great addition to my Cirque collection and should be in yours!

Cirque du Soleil revolutionized the circus arts, transcending the traditional big-top approach of the past to spotlight elaborate sets, lavish costume, and original music. Founded in Quebec in 1984 by Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier, the original group comprised local street performers; shunning animal acts to focus exclusively on human spectacles -- stilt-walkers, jugglers, fire-eaters, and the like -- the troupe quickly earned a following throughout Canada, eventually spreading across North America....
