Aratan N Azawad

Aratan N Azawad

The distinctive style of rock played by the Tuareg of Mali and Niger continues to reach more and more people outside of that region. Marked by bluesy riffing, chugging rhythms, and chant-like vocals, this tranced-out music is hard for many to resist. Tinariwen, Tartit, Toumast, Tidawt, and Etran Finatawa (which has Wodaabe as well as Tuareg members) are some of the bands that have reached a wider audience. Terakaft — originally founded by former members of Tinariwen — released Aratan N Azawad in 2011, and it should not disappoint fans of the Desert Blues. “Alghalem” has the style’s trademark handclaps, hints of Jimi Hendrix, and vocals by bassist Abdallah Ag Ahmed. “Talikoba” cruises along on a loping, reggae-like rhythm and features the singing of guitarist Liya Ag Ablil aka Diara. Guitarist Sanou Ag Ahmed sings lead on “Ahod,” which interestingly evokes country music. “Kek Amidi Nin,” with its rattling percussion and edgy guitar riff, might be the best thing here. The album closes with “Hegh Ténéré,” which covers a topic popular the world over — it’s a love song.
