iTunes Editors’ Notes

The courageous and atypical blend of styles contained on 1984’s Treasure captivated Cocteau Twins fans, who often deem it the band’s best work. One writer in the U.K. music press went so far as to say he heard “the voice of God” in the band’s fusion of postpunk, electronic music, and new age. There was no question that the Cocteaus were backing away from the abrasiveness of their early albums and moving toward the twinkling, ethereal romance exemplified by “Pandora (For Cindy),” which became one of their signature songs. But by using a blend of ancient, Eastern, and occasionally invented languages, singer Elizabeth Fraser established a musical vocabulary that reached beyond pop-music conventions. Because the band was so sincere and audacious in the way it chose to subvert mainstream tastes, they could create wondrous images in sound that would've otherwise rung hollow. These songs dispense entirely with pop pleasure, reaching instead for the terror and splendor of a snowstorm or monsoon.

Customer Reviews

it's really THAT good

if you're here and you don't know it - get it. i co-teach a class in the history of rock n roll. after about 1966 things really start relating and homaging things before them. cocteau twins don't. they are truly an original signpost. woah... no one did this. my favorite thing about them is that they were always a pop group that just thought they didn't have to sound like any other pop group before them. their music is the most beautiful, sensual, and hopeful music i know. it's been 20 years of listening and they still sound amazing and important. treasure is the masterpiece. start here. welcome, it's a great journey!

Flawless

There are times when I am frustrated by the way that a word can lose its meaning with time and usage. When I would like to say a word and have it impact with all the force that it had when it was first created. This album makes me feel that way. Specifically, it makes me feel that way about the word "flawless".

My Only Choice

If there was a house fire and I could only rescue one CD, this is the one I would grab. It is perfect from start to finish (and what a finish Donimo is)! Elizabeth Frasier's voice is like a warm blanket.

A group whose distinctly ethereal and gossamer sound virtually defined the enigmatic image of the record label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979. Taking their name from an obscure song from fellow Scots Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were originally formed by guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie and later rounded out by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an utterly unique performer...
