Album Review

The solo debut from this Slackers frontman comes with precious little explanation — no musician credits, no name for the backing band, no information about the mysterious Lady Bug House. Put the disc in the player, though, and all becomes clear: Ruggiero's gone singer/songwriter on us, and on all of these songs he's accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. And it sounds like the Lady Bug House is his living room, or someone else's. The whole affair would be strongly reminiscent of Chris Murray and his own post-band multi-track bedroom recordings, except that the sound quality on Ruggiero's album is actually quite good — and there's not a ska tune to be found on the whole program. Instead, there are minor masterpieces like the Tin Pan Alley-ish "86 the Mayo," the nasty "International War Criminal," the bluesy rockabilly of "20 Flight Rock" (an Eddie Cochran cover), and a fine solo version of the Slackers classic "Yes It's True". His charmingly thuggish vocal style, always one of the central attractions of the Slackers sound, is especially affecting in this intimate, stripped-down setting. Very, very nice.

Couldn't be better...

This album is great. When I picked this up I was thinking Slackers, but to my suprise it's not really even close. This just goes to show you that Vic Ruggiero is truely a talented man. I love the new take on the The Slackers "Yes It's True" and "86 the Mayo". And the originals are fantastic. Check out "Vic's Lament". Definitly a feel good album and completely worth the cash.

Musical Genius

I'm of an advanced age these days, a curmudgeon for sure. I'm also a heard that all before kind of musical snob musician type. I don't listen to whole albums, I listen to the best 4 songs in a given bands entire catalog because to do otherwise would cost a fortune and further anger me.
One of the few exceptions is Vic Ruggiero' s Live at the Ladybug house. I listen to this simple little album over and over again, loving every song , every time. I am a huge fan of the Slackers( Vic's Band), especially the first 5 or 6 albums.
This album is the folk music of a generation of angry aging punks who don't feel like splitting lips in the pit anymore. This album and a good glass of bourbon could make a dumpster feel like home.
