EDITORS’ NOTES

A welcome, expertly performed recording of three 20th-century American symphonies—a genre that lies strangely neglected. Piston’s 1955 Symphony No. 6 is a delight, with its heady blend of Copland’s wide vistas, Hollywood gilding, and European rigor. Samuel Jones’ tonal 1992 Symphony No. 3 breathtakingly depicts the geology and history of Texas’ Palo Duro Canyon alongside a stunning night sky, courtesy of xylophone and celesta. Also from 1992 is the glorious, multilayered Symphony No. 2 by Stephen Albert, who tragically died just before its completion. Heavily influenced by Sibelius, his beautiful masterpiece deserves a wide currency.
