iTunes Review

Easily one of the most popular underground artists in hip-hop today, Los Angeles MC/producer Blu has been steadily building his reputation ever since his breakout release, 2006's collaboration with Exile, Below the Heavens. Over the following five years, he's been heavily jocked by a wide assortment of bloggers, mainstream publications, and fellow artists, with numerous labels throwing deals at him and a fanatical following who endlessly gush about him online. Released by indie-rap powerhouse Nature Sounds, Amnesia collects several tracks from HerFavouriteColo(u)r, showcasing his unique vocal style over some excellent, jazz-drenched production. Smart and positive without coming off as a save-the-world cornball, his strong lyricism and unpredictable cadence sounds great against a backdrop of mellow drums, thick basslines, tinkling piano riffs, and the unmistakable charm of dusty vinyl pops embedded into his loops. Both versions of the title track flip extra-smooth Billie Holiday samples, while "Since" boasts a strong doo-wop vibe. Another impressive joint from one of the game's fastest rising new stars.

Short but sweet.

great ep from blu to hold us over til NoYork.

You're my boy, Blu!

Never disappoints.

It's Blu, and if you see the "e" drop 'em!

Anything Blu puts out, is worth buying. Even if it is a two year old mixtape, finally making it's way to an official iTunes release, leading up to (hopefully) two new projects to be released in 2011 from Blu.

Real Hip Hop, at it's finest - from an established yet still up-and-coming MC with a unique outlook on life & Hip Hop. Refreshing, I'm not going to say because everything else out is garbage, because there is some great Hip Hop out today if you know where to look for it - but because Blu's take is different from any other lyricist who rocks a mic right.

Check out "Below The Heavens" with Exile, and the Johnson&Jonson project too ... fans will enjoy The Piece Talks album as well, in addition to the countless collections of Blu verses available online.

This is the future, of Hip Hop music.

Grab this EP, whether you've heard three of the tracks before or are looking at this wondering what it's all about - Blu does not disappoint.

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active:

With his cool-headed SoCal demeanor and everyman charisma, Blu was championed at the onset of his recording career when he collaborated with Emanon DJ/producer Exile for the highly acclaimed LP Below the Heavens (2007). Born Johnson Barnes in Inglewood, California, Blu, whose stepfather was a pastor, was influenced by gospel and Christian rap when he was developing his MC skills in middle and high school. His musical turning point came when he first heard the Common classic "I Used to Love H.E.R."...
