EDITORS’ NOTES

The Ecuadorian singer’s electro-pop debut is full of sonic refreshment and luminous surprise. Lush but understated, futuristic but organic, “Isla Magica” exemplifies her twinkling charisma. Nudged by a hushed hip-hop beat, “Moai Y Yo” remains as swift as a sparrow and gentle as a wink. “Llamame” layers a breath-filled bossa nova with fizzy, fluttering sounds, while “Ciudad Desnuda” is electro-pop at its most shyly seductive. Usbeck could well be our space-age Astrud Gilberto—just listen to the way the neon notes of “Playa Escondida” flutter and float like blown dandelion seeds.

Definitely one of the best albums of the year. I speak Spanish and to understand every single word she sings makes you feel so connected to her. She's like the pop version of Juana Molina in my opinion. Which is a good thing. I admire both so much!
