An Axe to Grind

Searching for Mike Nesmith tunes, I found this gem of an album. Yes, Michael Nesmith is his father and yes Christian does has musical talent…..quite a lot of it. But, the comparison will end there. This is not your country rock fare, this is rock and roll. Think Van Halen guitar riffs with Foo Fighters styling. Think rock n’ roll, my friends. After sampling the songs I had to buy it the album. After I bought the album I let my friends listen and they all loved it. Now they want it for their very own! My favorites are “Smash and Grab” ( over six minutes of pure electric guitar!) , “Buggin” and his cover of the Beatles, “I am the Walrus”. On the downside, I wish he put a bit more vocals, but listen and let Christian’s music speak for itself.

Nesmith shreds

I listened to this out of curiosity (being a childhood Monkee fan when they were in their 60s heyday) and, quite frankly, I was blown away by the guitar playing. Being an ardent fan of Holdsworth, Keaggy, E. Johnson, Hackett, S. Morse, Vai, etc., etc. (you get the picture), I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised at the chops displayed here. The real question is, why haven't we heard anything like this from this guy long before now? However, unlike the previous reviewer, I firmly believe this album would be greatly enhanced if Nesmith had simply offered us up a selection of instrumental tracks, for that is where he shines. The vocal offerings are just average rock fare, in my view. With the exception of a GREAT version of “I am the Walrus” they really aren’t all that exciting. Hence, only four stars. But if you are into guitar, the instrumental tracks definitely belong in your collection. The rest is purely a matter of taste. Hopefully next time out Nesmith will leave the vocals aside and give us a hefty serving of the sizzling instrumental guitar that he demonstrates that he is so capable of delivering.
