Editors’ Notes

Having established a burgeoning, Grammy-bedecked career as one of America's most successful singer-songwriters via The Stranger and 52nd Street, then taken a darker, formulaic glimpse at the personal traumas that lie behind The Nylon Curtain, Billy Joel retreated to the charms of pre-Beatles' American pop here. Though solid Brill Building and R&B charms had always coursed through his best work, here Joel proudly wears them on his sleeve. Whether evoking the energetic verve of the Four Seasons on "Uptown Girl," channeling some Memphis soul into "Easy Money" or paying loving tribute to the street-corner doo-wop of "The Longest Time," Joel virtually abandons the angry angst that become one of his songwriting trademarks. In its place is love for musical influences that spans the Beethoven-rooted chorus of "This Night" and effusive, Dion-esque pop of "Tell Her About It."

Customer Reviews

How has no one reviewed this album????!

I don't usually write reviews here, but to ignore one of the most fun albums of the 80's would be a crime. I was in high school when this came out, and though it took Joel just 8 weeks to write and record, the singles climbed the charts for the next TWO YEARS! It again showed that Billy could jump from genre to genre without missine a beat, hitting just the right note each time. "An Innocent Man" mimics and improves on many of the Righteous Brothers hits, while "The Longest Time" is a doo-wop classic. How many albums do you know that have SIX top twenty hits? It showed a fun side to Billy Joel that everyone knew from concerts, but that wasn't often seen on albums, and his voice is amazing.

An 80's Classic

A great 80's album that has endured the test of time and some of the best tracks were never released as singles. The songs have great diversity and range. Billy Joel sounds inspired, Liberty DeVitto beats his drums near a career best throughout the album and if you listen closely you will hear David Sanborn on Sax on “Christie Lee,” a personal favorite. An eighties classic...

There isn't a song on this album that's a loser! You will love it.

Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar in the late '70s and '80s, as he racked an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles. Born in the Bronx, Joel was raised in the Long Island suburb of Hicksville,...
