When hardcore kids listen to jazz, Black Sabbath, and John Denver...

You end up with Engine Kid. One of finest of the Revelation Records bands that was pushing the boundaries of what could be considered post-hardcore in the mid-1990's. The "alternative radio" structure of opening track "Windshield" is a bit of a head fake which doesn't reveal the sonic density and experimentation that lies within the record. From the tragic track "Stitches" to their epic cover of John Coltrane's "Ole" (with horns courtesy of labelmates Iceburn) this record does not disappoint.

Engine Kid was one of the many indie bands of the mid-'90s that emulated post-rock/noise rock pioneers Slint. But unlike most of those who swam in the Louisville band's wake, Engine Kid weren't mere imitators. Formed in the early '90s in Seattle, WA, the band originally consisted of bassist Brian Kraft, drummer Chris Vandebrooke, and guitarist/vocalist Greg Anderson.
