iTunes Review

In 2008, Steven Ellison — a.k.a. Flying Lotus — released Los Angeles, a slice of exciting instrumental hip-hop/electronica-infused with a spiritual jazz vibe, and it didn’t sound quite like anything else. (Ellison’s great aunt is the legendary harpist and pianist Alice Coltrane, and his grandmother, Marilyn McLeod, wrote songs for Motown.) 2010’s Cosmogramma feels like an extension of Los Angeles, but one thing that sets it apart is its mix of live playing and electronics. The brief opener, “Clock Catcher,” places digital details next to Rebekah Raff’s harp, which makes a number of appearances here. “Pickled!” is a swirl of motion driven by Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, whose propulsive bass playing evokes British prog rockers Yes. “Intro / A Cosmic Drama” and “Zodiac S**t” are marked by the glowing string arrangements of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, a key member of the Los Angeles-based jazz collective Build An Ark. Ravi Coltrane plays mellow tenor sax lines on “Arkestry,” an atmospheric cut with jazzy drums and fluttering harp. “Table Tennis” finds vocalist Laura Darlington accompanied by a variety of intriguing sounds, including acoustic guitar and ping-pong ball rhythms.

Epic.

As far as producers go, nobody can touch FlyLo right now.

FlyLo HAS EVOLVED!! Running for best record of 2010.

This new record from Flying Lotus is on another level. The layers in this record create an atmosphere that fills your ears with the whole range of sounds that are masterfully pieced together. It is forward growth and also a departure from the Hip Hop inspired slow beats from previous records. The sound here is more mature and sophisticated with a level of complexity that is well programmed and balanced. The tracks that stand out the best are Computer Face / Pure Being, "German Haircut", "Recoiled", and "Arkestry". My favorite track on the record is "Do the Astral Plane". AMAZING. Great work Flying Lotus and I cant wait for remixes and the next record.

This is the best thing ever

Makes my brain spin

Experimental electronic music producer Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison, is a grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod (the co-writer of Diana Ross' "Love Hangover"), as well as a great-nephew of pianist Alice Coltrane, and therefore a cousin of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. Ellison made beats for the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim network before releasing his debut full-length, 1983, which resembled the work of fellow avant-garde hip-hop producers Madlib, J Dilla, and Ammoncontact on Plug Research in 2006....
