iTunes Review

Andre Previn is best known as a classical conductor and film composer, but he’s also played jazz piano off and on for decades. As the title implies, Alone is a solo effort, and it features ten standards and three originals: “Darkest Before the Dawn,” “You’re Gonna Hear from Me,” and “André’s Blues.” (The last track was improvised in the studio.) It’s no surprise Previn displays great feeling for these standards: he’s probably been well acquainted with the songs for years. There aren’t many frills in these sensitively refined interpretations, and when Previn interjects a bluesy inflection or alters a harmony, the effect is subtly bracing. Every note seems to be necessary; every passing run fits in snugly within the larger framework. Like most good jazz versions of the Great American Songbook, these instrumentals are informed by the lyrics, and on his cover of the Rodgers and Hart classic, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” you can practically hear the piano singing. Among the originals, “You’re Gonna Hear from Me,” which closes the album, is particularly moving. Alone brings great intimacy to these oldies and Previn originals.

Alone - Ballads for Solo Piano

No real fireworks here, just some lovely piano playing by a great musician. His simple approach allows the beauty of these songs to shine through. This is the kind of music to listen to when you come home after a hard day. Andre Previn is multi-talented. Whether it's conducting Vaughan Williams or playing with Shelley Manne, he always dispalys a high level of muscianship.

I Can't Get Started

Known in the Classical & Jazz world for many years, it doesn't get any better than Andre Previn Solo, playing ballads. I've been a fan of Andre Previn since the 60s & this album is a real "keeper".

It's great to be Alone with Andre

I read where Andre Previn said, " I told them, 'I have to be honest with you, the style I would play in is kind of forgotten today, and it's possible that no one would buy it.' " I did. I remember two things- he has always been a fabulous player and I forget the other thing. If you are mature and love great technique and artistry it is here for you. Lucky us.

One of the most versatile musicians on the planet, André Previn has amassed considerable credentials as a jazz pianist, despite carving out separate lives first as a Hollywood arranger and composer, and then as a world-class classical conductor, pianist, and composer. Always fluid, melodic, and swinging, with elements of Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, and Horace Silver mixed with a faultless technique, Previn didn't change much over the decades but could always be counted upon for polished, reliable...
