Album Review

Paul Halley's multifaceted piano virtuosity has been heard with Paul Winter as well as on Halley's previous solo release. His latest, Angel on a Stone Wall, offers a contemplative reflection of his talents and an inspired composite of musical portraits, from Spain to the Grand Canyon. The talents of other fine players add to the varied appeal, including cellist Eugene Friesen, percussionist Glen Velez, bass player Russ Landau and sitarist Amit Chatterjee. One piece, "Ubi Caritas (Where There Is Love)" incorporates Gregorian singers and African chants, with a guest appearance by Paul Winter. Halley, in fine company, has never sounded better. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, Rovi

Beautiful Memories!

As a child we always had dinner in the dining room by candlelight with music in the background (we were all very musically inclined - especially the folks). This album was always one of my favorites and it brings back beautiful childhood memories. (Yes, all my friends thought were a bit odd...) So happy I found this. Also, Paul Winter... ahhh.

Angel on a Stone Wall

Some would consider this effort Paul Halley's finest work, and rightly so. Colors and emotions abound in this eclectic collection of songs that tug at the heartstrings. Though the CD was originally a gift from a friend, I have rediscovered it and study it as an example of the finest playing and composition. While the entire project is praiseworthy, of special note is "The Prince and the Pauper", a simple duet that is beauty itself, and "Todo Mundo", which never fails to lift the spirits. It's been discontinued by the manufacturer, but still available here and there.

Though he's best known as a member of the Paul Winter Consort, this English-born pianist has an impressive career of his own. After receiving a Masters degree from Cambridge, with prizes in composition and harpsichord playing, Halley was named Musical Director at New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine. There he expanded its music program to include a rich combination of contemporary as well as classical styles. He also wrote choral works and Broadway scores. Winter, whom Halley met in 1980,...
