Album Review

If you want these songs on a regular CD in a regular jewel case with artwork, you'll have to pay up and treat the title as a call to action rather than a price point. If you're content with high-bitrate MP3s, you can get them for free with some (different) printable artwork at the band's website. Giving away music intentionally is nothing new. Plenty of artists have offered free downloads before, but since Free Music is a five-song EP of new material — as opposed to a single studio scrap, demo, or live performance — that has generated some attention, it could have a decent-sized impact on how many previously unaware people hear 50 Foot Wave. The band has asked those who have downloaded the release to copy and share it as much as possible. It's certainly the kind of release that most fans would purchase, even though it's neither as rambunctious nor as exhausting as the band's previous two releases. Most of the songs do have the sharp, strange twists and abrupt turns that the band does so well, but the songs aren't as liable to stick to memory. The playing is tight and ferocious, as always, the sound of a band that never tires of peeling the paint off the walls of small clubs.

You can find this ep along with 3 other, a live album, a proper album, etc. for free on line. Not trying to dog out itunes....I've spent hundreds of dollars here (and will spend hundreds of dollars more), but I downloaded 32 songs from this incredible band for FREE! Kristin Hersch is AWESOME!!!! Throwing Muses debut album is still one of my top ten all time!!!

Another great EP

Although there are only five songs, I'd rather have an EP like this without a single weak track than a so-so album with a lot of filler. The sound is different from their debut EP and Golden Ocean (different producer), but all the songs are good, with lots of energy.

Formed: 2003 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

50 Foot Wave took form after the release of Throwing Muses' second self-titled album, in 2003. Though the trio did contain two former members of that group -- tireless singer/songwriter/guitarist Kristin Hersh and bassist Bernard Georges -- an effort was made from the beginning to make the separation of the two groups very distinct. Hersh and her bandmates (rounded out by drummer Rob Ahlers) vowed to play around 100 shows a year and release an EP every nine months. The first EP came out in early...
