The Levellers

Back in 1992, my husband discovered The Levellers while living in London on his semester abroad. Their albums were very difficult to find back in the States in the 1990s. We are both thrilled to see their work now available on iTunes.

Levelling The Land

Actually, I was shocked to find that any of the Levellers' catalog was available on iTunes. I consider them to be one of the most overlooked great bands out there. It seems they are virtually unknown in America. Only a few of their discs had a stateside release. Anyway, this is the disc that turned me onto them, and among fans it's considered near-legendary. Since then it has been a serious search to keep up with their releases, mostly through high priced import discs. So consider yourself lucky to be able to get their music this cheaply.
Levelling The Land is the Leveller's 2nd release (The equally great A Weapon Called The Word preceded this). As with all Levellers' music it's a fiddle-heavy mix of British rock, folk and punk that somehow clicks big-time. Their music often comes with a message of political and/or social responsibility, but whether you agree or not with the lyrics, the quality and power of the music is hard to ignore.
I love the whole disc, but if you are new and looking for something to sample, One Way, Fifteen Years, The Boatman, Liberty Song, Far From Home or Battle Of The Beanfield would all rate strongly in my book.
If you are a fan already, break out the big bucks and find the 2007 UK reissue of this album, which contains 5 bonus tracks (including a cool version of The Devil Went Down To Georgia) and a second disc - Live In Glastonbury from 1992. Well worth it!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The Levellers formed in 1988, bringing together five Brighton, England, musicians -- Mark Chadwick (vocals, guitar, banjo), Alan Miles (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica), Jeremy Cunningham (bass, bouzouki), Charlie Heather (drums), and Jon Sevink (fiddle). Forging out a pseudo-hippie, slightly punky folk-rock with a Celtic flavoring, the band released two EPs on their own Hag label in 1989, which led to a contract with Musidisc. The band released their first album, A Weapon Called the Word, in...
