Album Review

Pressing play on a new Bolt Thrower album is a lot like opening the lid to your favorite pizza. The package may look a little different, but inside you know exactly what you're going to get. The Birmingham, England, natives have been singularly obsessed with the brutality of war as filtered through guitar, bass, and drums since the late '80s. They're dependable to a fault, and that's either a strength to those who love them or a weakness to their detractors. On their eighth studio album, Those Once Loyal, fat riffs wrap themselves around a relentless rhythm section that can go from thrash to midtempo doom metal at the crack of a rifle. Longtime fans will celebrate the return of original vocalist Karl Willetts, as his death metal croak is significantly deeper than previous vocalist Dave Ingram, adding a weight to standout cuts like "At First Light" and the serpentine title track. Those Once Loyal may not break any new ground for the band, but one would be hard-pressed to find a better use for the term heavy metal.

Another great Bolt Thrower album

You will definitely not be disappointed with Bolt Thrower's latest offering. There are few bands that rock with more power or might than B.T., and its shows on every track. "At First Light" is my personal favorite. Take a listen...

War and Bolt Thrower- together as one

If war and death are what you crave in your death metal, then this is for you. The legendary Bolt Thrower produce this epic cd of infernal devastation on the battlefield. Each BT cd gets better and this proves to be no different. Heavy duo guitars from Baz and Gav complimented with the grinding bass of Jo (this a a chick mind you). With the return of their original frontman, the vocals are back to par (not that the others were bad). This is the background for any battle, true to life or playing Games workshop table games.

very good!

this is an excellent album with lots of good songs so that everyone has a personal favorite: At First Light and When Cannons Fade are the best songs

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

One of Britain's most consistent and enduring death metal bands, Birmingham's Bolt Thrower has weathered the best and worst of times in the extreme genre's history without ever giving in to commercial temptations, or hardly even altering its sound. The fact that they were unusually blessed with a steady lineup throughout much of their career no doubt contributed to this stability, and though they were rarely bestowed wild praise for their efforts, with most of their competitors or contemporaries...
