“La Llorona” is a classic Mexican folk song. There are many interpreters, so I purchased several versions: Luis Aguilar, Trío Calaveras, Lola Beltrán, Juan Mendoza, and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán. My preference is for Luis Aguilar, who is accompanied by mariachis, of course; this performance is soulful and technically well done; his voice is a “tenore robusto”. Second is Juan Mendoza, a classic performance, with much gusto, and he is a lyric tenor. Third is Trío Calaveras, because there is audience sounds (cabaret, café? Not sure). It’s followed by Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán whose interpretation is just that, an instrumental, but played with gusto. Lola Beltrán recording seems to have been made at the end of her career, or at the end of a tour, because there is no soul and no vigor in her performance; her recording is a live performance in a theater in Paris, and their applause is anemic.
