Magick Spells

Magick Spells

This Los Angeles–based band have the good fortune of featuring three siblings—Liv, Noa, and Gab Niles, all children of The Knack’s bassist, Prescott Niles—and a fourth member in singer/multi-instrumentalist Blues Williams. There’s a clear musicianship here and, more importantly, a songwriting expertise that guarantees that even in their darkest moments, Gateway Drugs know the value of the song. “Fridays Are for Suckers” is a natural pop tune amid the grumbling guitars and slightly dazed harmonies. Shoegaze and psychedelia blur the pop sound on tracks like “Mommy,” “Head,” and “Cavity Creeps.” It’s a confident debut filled with promise and real execution.
