Album Review

On his third album, Anytime, Brian McKnight continues with the mellow, romantic urban R&B that has become his trademark, but there's a new twist. Most of the album consists of songs he has written and produced, but "You Should Be Mine," the first single pulled from Anytime, is produced by Puff Daddy and features a rap by Mase. On paper, the pairing seems a little odd, but it works surprisingly well, as does "Hold Me," which was co-written by Mary J. Blige and features Trackmasterz. McKnight hasn't exhausted its possibilities yet — Anytime is as strong as its predecessor — but "You Should Be Mine" and "Hold Me" suggest that he may be better off pursuing a new, hip-hop-influenced direction.

"Anytime" is possibly the best R&B song ever

"Anytime" is possibly the best R&B song ever. This track grooves so deep you feel it long after its over. I particularly love the piano which dances in between the beats, bonding McKnight's vocal phrases together. Lyrically, McKnight's message rings so universally true that if you don't feel him, then you haven't been living on this planet. Who hasn't loved someone that is no longer in their life -- wondering what became of that person and whether or not they sometimes think of you? This song is simply timeless.

This album rocks!

One of Brian's best albums.

brian mcknight at his best

this is a pretty deep album. mcknight proves to be a great songwriter with this album and the production from puff doesn't hurt either. i still believe he is one of the most underrated R&B artists to this day and he deserves a little more credit for the classics that he has poured his heart out into such as "anytime", "back at one", "6-8-12", "love of my life", "superhero", "everytime you go away", etc. this is one of those albums that you can listen to the whole way through. this is one of brian's best albums and if you truly enjoy pure (non-watered down) R&B music you will definately not be dissapointed in this purchase.

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

One of the most consistent and versatile adult contemporary R&B artists, Brian McKnight placed ten albums across two decades -- from the early '90s through the early 2010s -- within the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B albums chart. Whether he wrote and produced for himself or collaborated with the likes of Diddy, the Underdogs, and Tim & Bob, he enjoyed moderate commercial success without ever quite becoming a superstar. This, along with a down-to-earth personality and a catalog heavy on mellow material,...
