Editors’ Notes

From the first song “Apartment,” it’s evident that this Irvine, California quintet plays the kind of handsome and finessed indie rock that fans of Fleet Foxes and Kings Of Leon are sure to enjoy. The breezy “Cough Syrup” contrasts moody cellos with some shimmering keyboard work by My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster, but it’s the winding guitars here that jump out.

my body: epitome of a good alternative rock song

ok let's get cheesy here: my body tells me noooo, but i won't quit cuz i want more young the giant!

What a surprise that these guys are back!

A couple of years ago I heard the Shake My Hand EP and kept wondering if these guys would ever have a follow up. They were too good to be a one EP wonder indie band so to speak. Little did I know that were refining their sound to one day resurface and come back better than ever. On this album, they have touched up my two favorite songs on the EP, and have also made many other great songs to offer. I visited San Diego and Los Angeles over the summer, and heard that they were touring there. I didn't get to see them, but after hearing this album, I hear that they have captured the spirit of the west coast perfectly. The closer "Guns Out" especially does. It is one of the most notably wonderful closing songs in indie rock this year. I am so glad that they have returned to be one of the best and most creative bands around! Great work guys!

Break Out Extrordinaire

Touring the country for years with only their Demo EP "Shake My Hand" as a recorded reference, the only way to hear this bands incredibly catchy melodies, complicated yet simple guitar lines, and grooving drum and bass licks from the newer songs was to see a show. They are great stage performers, but finally, one can hear them any time thanks to the release of this breakout album! The vocal lines will stay in your head for days after hearing a song, and the band really works together to create a unified sound that resonates with a huge range of listeners-it is very agreeable music. Their Maroon 5-esque sophisticated pop-rock sound blends with a more danceable Franz Ferdenand-esque vibe that makes their sound incredibly hard to categorize and compare to other bands. The simplicity of their song structures and instrumentation (Cough Syrup for example) combined with the complexity of the chordal and melodic experimentation (Appartment) and rhythmic syncopation (the drums in the song St. Walker) give this band a truly unique feel. From the clever re-inventions of old classics (Cough Syrup and Garands) to new songs like Guns Out and My Body that will have you singing all day, all in all, this is a great break out album way too long in the making. There are certainly great things waiting for this band in the not so distant future-Keep your eyes on them and buy this album!

Formed: 2004 in Irvine, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Formerly known as the Jakes, Young the Giant began making eclectic indie rock in Irvine, California, where bandmates Sameer Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass), and Francois Comtois (drummer) all met each other during high school. Following graduation, the guys ditched their respective bands and formed their own outfit, drawing upon their European and Middle Eastern roots to forge a worldly, summery sound. Although the boys left Orange County shortly...
