Album Review

On what's been announced as the band's last splash, Otep go out in a furious blaze on their sixth and final album, Hydra. With heavier guitars and sinister, off-putting electronics, it feels as though the bandmembers are using their final outing to expand their sound in some new directions, oftentimes transcending the nu-metal leanings they have traditionally worked in. The most static element of the band's sound, the vocals of Otep Shamaya herself, remain as emotionally charged as ever as they shine a truthful light on the darker corners of the human experience. While the absence of Otep's music and message will certainly be missed, Hydra finds the band going out at the top of its creative game, a small consolation that hopefully softens the blow caused by the group's departure.

Pass on this

Unless you are a die-hard spoken word fan, skip this album. Not really worth $9.99. As a huge fan of their music I found this to be spoken word first, music as an afterthought. Even the songs with music seem like they were created with recycled riffs. No real choruses worth remembering like with the last few albums. At 40, I am over the torture porn lyrics talking about killing sickos. It is starting to sound contrived Otep. Save it for your poetry books.

Ugh

Otep has tarnished any legacy they had with yet another terrible album. I wish I could pretend to like this album but I just can't.

The talking album...

I get its obviously supposed to be a concept album, but there's pretty much 5 songs on here, and even those are kind've talking like in apex predator.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Otep got their start in late 2000, when singer/band namesake Otep Shamaya brought her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing to a crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j. The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves...
