All About Eve revisited
This musical is a re-creation of "All About Eve" and does an excellent job of capturing this excellent classic movie. If you are a fan of the movie you will find much pleasure in the many songs that remind you of favorite lines. It is not the greatest musical ever produced but it is very enjoyable. It has great theatre numbers.
This musical not only won the Tony for Best Musical, but was a career defining role for Lauren Bacall - one listen tells you why...it turned one of the best film dramas ever made into a fantasically fun stage musical. "But Alive" could not be more entertaining - if one listen to this song does not make you smile - I'd check your pulse! (And if you need proof, check out the clip on YouTube.)
A fun 60's Broadway show
This show was built as a vehicle for Lauren Bacall, certainly one of the strangest voices ever to grace Broadway, but it wasn't her voice that people were going to experience, it was the star presence. Applause was one of those shows in the '60's that was about high energy and pure fun. Quite a tuneful score from Charles Strouse, composer of Annie. It has one of the most scenery-chewing songs for Eve Harrington toward the end of the show called "One Halloween" that any musical actress would love to tackle. A great show? Naw. But who cares when you're having so much fun. Can't wait to see how Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens) does with Margo Channing this week at Encores! Hope they record it with a real musical theatre voice like hers.
