Folk music with a story to tell

I was lucky enough to be introduced to Girls in Trouble through a live performance. I loved it so much that I went home and immediately bought their first (eponymous) album. While I (unlike Alicia Jo Rabins) am no Torah scholar, the biblically-inspired songs of these "girls in trouble" are familiar, and resonant. Lyrically, they're wonderful stories. And musically, this band is really coming into its own. The production value on this album is far better than their first, and the melding of seemingly incongruous parts into a pretty, melodic whole is much smoother. They also stray from their standard folk sound and go a little deeper into their different veins of influence with a song more rock-y (Lemons) and more classical (Waltz for a Beheading, an instrumental reprise of a song off their first album, Who Sent the Heat?). All told, it's a beautiful, well-curated evolution of their sound and theme. It's not to be missed.

Beautiful record

Great songwriting, a nice followup to their first record.
