Album Review

...Ballads dominate the album, accounting for seven of the album's ten tracks; Hargrove generally interprets them in a cool, emotionally detached manner...Compiled from four albums whose recording dates span from 1989 to 1993, Approaching Standards...also documents Hargrove's growth as a musician. "Everything I Have is Yours/Dedicated to You," taken from the 1993 recording Of Kindred Souls, finds Hargrove in a more mature frame of mind, and points toward the much better albums he would soon make.

Timeless Jazz

Give this album one listen and you will wonder how you missed it when it was released nearly 2 decades ago.

I discovered Roy's music shortly before going off to college. I remember playing this record on the most overcast of fall days and on the coldest of nights. The music would drift down the halls of my dorm into rooms of the cowboys from west Texas, the goth kids from the burbs, the privileged sons of executives, the underprivileged odds beaters, and those from distant lands.

They all became fans of Roy.

A few years back I reconnected with one of my college mates. He shared with me that one of his fondest memories was everyone sitting in my dorm room one nite and listening to this record on repeat. No one said a word for two hours, but the walls came down. Some read magazines, others did home work. Some drank wine another smoked a cigar.

That night we all just chilled and became one nation under Roy.

Give this album a try, it will move your soul. Share it with your friends and watch it move them as well.

My intro to Roy Hargrove

This is one of my favorite Roy Hargrove cd's. I just graduated high school and had already enjoyed the stylings of Miles, Coltrane, and the other great jazz musicians. I wanted someone younger to enjoy and connect with and I found it with this Roy Hargrove cd, I was hooked. And he has not disappointed me yet. Easy to Remember, You Don't Know What Love Is, and Things We Did Last Summer are amazing. Definitely worth the price.

Roy Hargrove is a hard bop-oriented musician (and acclaimed "Young Lion") who became one of America's premier trumpeters during the late 1980s and beyond. A fine, straight-ahead player who spent his childhood years in Texas, Hargrove met trumpet virtuoso Wynton Marsalis in 1987, when the latter musician visited Hargrove's high school in Dallas. Impressed with the student's sound, Marsalis allowed Hargrove to sit in with his band and helped him secure additional work with major players, including...
