iTunes Review

Rufus Wainwright's 1998 debut presented the kind of artist who hadn't emerged on a major label since folks like Van Dyke Parks (who co-produced a couple of tracks here) and Harry Nilsson created quirky, complex, melodic pop masterpieces in the late '60s. Informed by everything from classical music and jazz to Tin Pan Alley, singer/pianist Wainwright crafts a rarefied blend of pop song and art song, weaving beguiling tunes like the deceptively sunny "April Fools," the Spanish-tinged "Barcelona," and the wistful, yearning "Sally Ann."

Customer Reviews

A strong first album. "Millbrook" and "April Fools" stand out as particularly catchy. Wainwright's voice is distinctive, soothing and able, and his songwriting is the same. A must-listen for fans of Jack Johnson, Simon and Garfunkel, and Elliot Smith.

The arrangment of these songs is perfect, as is everything else. My favorites are "April Fools", "Matinee Idol", and "Imaginary Love". This album is well worth buying and playing to death, as it should be. Rufus Wainwright is the most talented music artist today and I hope that you listen to all his music and agree.
