Editors’ Notes

Since this was Loop's third and final album, 1990's A Gilded Eternity can be heard as the South London band's long goodbye. Groups such as Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. had turned up the noise quotient in the Amerindie underground, while My Bloody Valentine was deafening everyone on its side of the pond by the end of the '80s. Loop's Robert Hampson never tired of his hypnotic eternal riffing, but he also pressed his mates to creep outside the box. "Blood" encourages drummer John Willis to go tribal, while the vocals swim in and out of the mix with an eerie distance that's purely magical. "Vapour," "Afterglow," and "Breathe into Me" have an assuredness that comes from years of making variations on the same record. (That isn't a knock; many of the best bands slowly refine and repeat their core sounds.) Neil Mackay's bass leads the near–Joy Division apocalypse of "From Centre to Wave." "Be Here Now" serves as a perfect farewell anthem. The 1990 digital edition features "Shot with a Diamond" and "The Nail Will Burn (Burn Out)," both from a rare 7" single, plus the bonus track "Arc-Lite (Sonar)."

Good for what ails you ...

Loop came recommended to me on the tails of infatuations with My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3. Years on it's clear they were on another planet entirely. If you're searching for music by which to perform ritual, and you have no native religion other than guitar and the desire to sublimate yourself under a blanket of transcendent womb-noise, here's your in.

hardest band ever

i have been blown away by this band since the first time i heard them, and was really blown away after i was lucky enough to see them live. do yourself a favor, buy this and any other LOOP album or single that you may come accross and consider yourself lucky that you have. WolfFlow and AfterGlow

Pure Genius!

Sadly this is the last Loop studio record ever. These guys were WAY ahead of their time and completely under appreciated. I bought Fade Out on vinyl in 1988 and it blew me away. It sounded like no other music at that time. If you are a fan of newer bands like Dead Meadow and Comets on Fire, do yourself a favor and check out Loop.

Formed: 1986 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '10s

Discordant, elusive, and utterly hypnotic, Loop conjured a dark, trance-like spell that contrasted sharply with the prevailing British pop music trends of their time. Equal parts the Stooges, Can, and Hawkwind, they resurrected the concept of space rock for a new era in tandem with fellow travelers Spacemen 3, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance. Loop were formed in London in 1986 by vocalist/guitarist Robert Hampson, who at the time of the group's inception claimed...
