Hip-Hop is Alive

1.Overture- There is no better way he could have began this album. Overture beings with Tonedeff humming in the background and then continues with him harmonizing with himself but in different melodies. Next, a dark piano starts playing and the singing gets louder and louder until the drums kick in. In all honesty, I was waiting for him to start rapping a verse, but the singing/piano theme is best left off alone. 2.Archetype- The title is self-explanatory. ar•che•type (är k -t p ) n. An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; a prototype. This song basically acts as the anthem of the album letting the rest of the world know that Tone is the most original emcee and that the album will be recognized and copied in the future regardless if he’s underground or mainstream. 3. Masochist- Lyrically, this is one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. The piano sample on this track catches your attention straight from the beginning. Tonedeff put all his love and pain for the art that he has pursued on paper. Masochist is about what it’s like working hard when being an underground artist and not being able to reach the success such as artists like 50 cent who cash in millions of dollars with no talent and effort. Masochist should be played for anyone who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. 4.Let’s Go- One word: Party. After three songs that contain a lot of feelings, Tonedeff unleashes the fast marching band drum like “Let’s Go”. Tonedeff shows off his wits with his ridiculous wordplay and punch lines. Weekend night and you’re about to go out? Play this. 5.Disappointed- Disappointed is about when guys think they have found a perfect girl and then they get disappointed by some imperfection that the girl possesses. 6.Loyal- This song should be played over and over to every single person from when they hit middle school until they marry. “Loyal” is about the unfaithfulness in friendships and how most of your friends may not really be friends. Tonedeff makes it easy to relate to the lyrics as he speaks about realistic situations that we’ve all gone through. Ever been betrayed? Check this song out. 7.Porcelain- Now before I praise this song as a great storytelling, sad, beautiful song, let me just make it clear: Porcelain is the song of the year and if not, the greatest hip-hop song to ever be created. When I first heard the song, I was excited and couldn’t believe that I heard such a beautiful song. Porcelain is a song about Tonedeff’s crush that he had on a girl when he was in high school. This song already exemplifies the album’s attempts at reaching different crowds. Tonedeff didn’t have go back in time and talk about a simple crush, but the song can still be related to any person in high school. His point was that you shouldn’t get too caught up with someone who may not like you. In reality, every guy and girl who is reading this review knows exactly what I’m talking about. If you are breathing right now? Listen to this song. 8.Issawn- I love the beat and the energy of this track. It’s on another level. This track makes me want to do the craziest thing I have never done. When the beat breaks down and the whispering starts don’t be surprised if you start losing it. This track is crazy. Bored? Issawn. 9.Quotables Featuring Pack FM, Mecca, Session, Substantial, Rise, Wordsworth With a line-up like that you cant go wrong. Straight punch lines and witty wordplay throughout the whole song. Pretty straight forward boombap beat, and that works very well on a track like this. Every rapper sets the bar high for the next one, and since this track has a beat perfect for this type of compilation. 10.Politics This is the hit single of the album. The lyrics to this song are arguably the best up to date. Tonedeff unleashes his anger about the politics behind the music business. This song is as real as it gets and Tonedeff basically speaks for all the frustrated and non-superficial people in the business world. The beat is the only thing that I kind of dislike, but aside from that the lyrics are my favorite. The flow throughout the song is ridiculous and Tonedeff is on point with everything he says. Angry about something because the politics behind it? Play this song for it’s therapeutic reasons. 11.Pervert- Funny song. Title is self-explanatory. This is the anthem for all the single guys who are working hard at clubs, bars, or wherever they meet girls. Note: Don’t play this on your first date. 12.Heavyweight- Tonedeff makes it known that he’s better than your favorite rapper. Enough said. 13.Children- Public Service Announcement: Study these lyrics! Actually, this song should be given to every 8th grade student before he enters highs school. Every social issue is addressed in this track. I give a lot of props to Tone for being so on point with what high school is really about. A lot of people that you may be familiar with are mentioned on this song. Anetra brings a little femininity in the mix by singing in the chorus. This is probably the most important song on the album. 14.Case closed Talking bout going out with a bang! This beat is amazing. Tonedeff goes a little to fast for the average listener, but it’s still a fun song to listen to. This is a classic Tonedeff track. Pretty much closes the case. 15.Gathered- Perfect way to end the album. Just like the first song it has singing and piano ballads involved. This is something I had been waiting for throughout the entire album. The J Quartet, musical orchestra, joins Tonedeff on this beautiful song. This track really gives me chills. Tone sings on this song and says goodbye to the beautiful archetype he’s created.

A very refreshing change of pace

This is a great album. If you're looking for a change of pace from the monotonous bling-bling, fake thug rap you hear on the radio every day, check out Tonedeff's "Archetype". Tone displays so many different flows, and touches on many different topics on this album. Loyalty (loyal), the pressure you face as a child growing up (Children), having your heart broken (Porcelain), the evils of the music industry (Politics). He even sings two of the tracks, and on several others. And then you have the hilarious, sexually driven tracks, "Disappointed" and "Pervert". This is a really cool album any rap fan should check out.

And if ya don't know...now ya know

for those visiting this page for some random reason...unaware of who tonedeff is, take my word for it as a fan of his music that this is an amazing album, its not too "abstract" and not too "shoot em up, kill em". it is amazing and after having this album for about 8 months (as of april 8th) i can tell you honestly that this album never gets boring, if you are still skeptical, just download ANY one of these tracks (except overture, its a skit) and see for yourself, you will be impressed no matter what you download. Oh, and by the way, this guy is a M.C...so i don't know why they have it as an R&B/soul album. for more info. visit myspace.com/tonedeff ,and now for a quotable, "this discussion's been defunctioned as a.../general centerpiece sent at these enemies bent on resenting me/ better be set if we enter the end of peace" i told ya it was good!
